As an athlete, staying focused on our personal goals is an important component of achieving success, gaining strength and improving our agility. Too often, we train alone or in a small group. Some of us are missing the benefits gained by training within a larger group.
Within a group, at times we may push ourselves to move a little faster to catch up with a fellow runner or hang back / catch our breath with someone who needs a little moral support along their journey. When part of a group, we feel a greater part of the athletic experience. TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More! Whenever the opportunity presents itself to pursue what I am passionate about (Running / Swimming / or Biking) and serve the larger community, I always do my best to participate.
This September, I joined forces with over 500 fellow swimmers and volunteers in Swim for Life; a swim to support AIDS, Women’s Health and the Community in Provincetown Harbor. What a wonderful experience! We helped others, made new friends, improved our swimming technique and gained the experience of swimming as part of a larger team. Participants included fellow competitive swimmers, local HS swim teams, as well as swimmers who were participating in their very first fund raising endeavor. In my opinion, this is athleticism at its best.
Today, I encourage you to go out and register to participate in a Walk, a Swim, a 5K / Half Marathon or Mudder. Set a goal. Get involved with your community to do something bigger than you. Help others while helping yourself. It’s a WIN – WIN for all!
